Gold success for Oscar
Continuing his run of success, Oscar Lhost took the gold medal in the Hertfordshire Leon Paul Junior series Boys U/13 Foil event last weekend. Oscar fought with great determination throughout and clinched overall victory with a brave flesche attack with the score at 9-9
Congratulations to our U/13 epee team who won the bronze medal in the SE region team competition held at Wimbledon.
Our team, comprising William Jones, Luke Andrews and Michael Bektas took the bronze medal after some nail biting matches and very creditable performances against some strong (and very tall) opposition.
Well done boys!
HILARY PHILBIN – CLUB SECRETARY AT
ST PAUL’S FENCING CLUB – APPOINTED AS PRESIDENT OF BRITISH FENCING
Following the open competition for the new Presidential role, the Board of British Fencing has recently announced that Hilary Philbin has been appointed to the post. She took up her role as President on 1 September 2013. As President Hilary will be British Fencing’s leading representative with the international fencing federation (Federation International d’Escrime) and other international bodies. Hilary is currently a member of the FIE Promotion Commission, and was also recently appointed to the Executive of the International Wheelchair Fencing Committee.
On behalf of the Board of British Fencing, Chair David Teasdale stated: The Board believes that Hilary will be very effective in this Presidential role. She is already well known internationally, especially after her leadership in the organisation of the outstanding fencing programme in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Hilary commented: I feel honoured to have been appointed to the role of British Fencing President. Since my schooldays I have been heavily involved in fencing in so many different ways – as an international competitor, team manager, FIE referee, club coach, competition organiser and administrator at national and local level. I have had so much out of fencing throughout my life, and the role of President will enable me to continue to give something back. I look forward to representing British Fencing both at home and in the international arena.
St Paul’s Fencing Club wishes Hilary every success in her new role.
Duels for Friendship
St Paul's Team at Monaco
St Paul’s were delighted to be invited to compete in the Duels For Friendship international fencing competition in Monaco. The event took place in the atrium of the Monte Carlo Casino in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and was followed by a gala dinner held in the Salle D’Empire at the Hotel de Paris.
Our team was composed of Max Bayne and Luca Ciraolo, senior boys from from St Paul’s School, plus St Paul’s head coach Jim Philbin. Our star performer was Max who beat a member of the Monaco national team in the semi final to book his place in the final where he met Romanian Olympic silver medallist and European Women’s Epee Champion Ana Maria Branza. Max put up a fine performance to lose by the very creditable score of 10-4.
Club secretary, Hilary Philbin, also took part in the Ladies Foil event where she defeated former World Champion Marie Chantale Demaille in the semi-final before losing to reigning European Champion Martina Ganassin 10-4 in the final.
A most enjoyable and successful weekend for St Paul’s.
London Region Novices
Dimitri & Monica showing off their medals
Club members turned out for the London Novices Foil event held at St Benedicts School, Ealing. We had high expectations of being in the medals in both the men’s and women’s events but despite some strong performaces in the poules our hopes were dashed in the DE stages. Tim Slessinger, Martijn Kool and Don Brown competed in the men’s event where both Tim and Martijn reached the L8 stage but were then eliminated in closely fought contests.
In the women’s event Monica Costa and Fenella Nicholas took part where Fenella was eliminated in the L8 in a tough match. Monica had more success and eventually took the silver medal to add to her impressive collection. Well done Monica!
